A proven technology that has been around since about the 1940's, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has the potential to dramatically improve various industrial and service applications through automatic detection, unique identification, and control. RFID is expected to provide immense supply chain efficiencies, reduced labor costs, and accurate real-time resource information. In short, RFID is the new high tide in technology after Internet and wireless technology. RFID is changing the world and will change the world completely.
It is said, that "if the theme for 2004 was standards, fundamentals and education, the next phase will be a transition to integration services involving middleware and infrastructure. 2005 will become "the year of the integrator"."
In June of 2003, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said it plans to require its top 100 suppliers to put radio-frequency identification tags on shipping crates and pallets by January 2005. All other suppliers are being asked to comply by the end of 2006. In June of 2004, Wal-Mart said it will have RFID live in up to six distribution centers and as many as 250 Wal-Mart and Sam's Club locations. By January, it will expand RFID deployments from one to three Texas distribution centers and increase the number of participating stores from seven to more than 130. Most will be in northern Texas, with the remainder in south-central Oklahoma.
Since China is manufacturing around 65% of Wal-Mart merchandize, and China itself has a huge potential market for RFID, the RFID world is looking at China with extreme high interest.
Chinese Association of Science and technology (CAST) is working on pushing for the development of RFID between US and China. President of CAST Texas Chapter Qiang Bai is taking the responsibility of leading one of the prominent Dallas based high tech companies in providing RFID solutions between US and China. In March 2005, RFID World will be held in Dallas. Qiang Bai, in working with related Chinese government sector and CAST, is going to lead the China Pavilion under the RFID World.
